Production
Scriptwriter and director James Cameron supervised the project with his son, Josh. Josh Cameron, who was one of the film's producers, was unable to shoot due to a family emergency.
The film was shot in 2D for digital 3D theaters, in order to be compatible with current technology. Many of the filmmakers chose to shoot on 35 mm for historical accuracy.
The film's trailer was released on December 21, 2013, after production was completed.
Marketing
The film's theatrical poster, done by film artist Max Porter, depicts the sinking ship as a giant iceberg looming over the bow of the ship.
Release
The film was released in United States theaters on April 7, 2015, on 4K Ultra HD, 2D and IMAX 3D.
Box office
Following its limited theatrical release, the film made $1.3 million in North America on its opening weekend, debuting #2 at the box office behind Furious 7, $26 million in US box office and $15 million in international box office to become the seventh highest-grossing film in 2015. By the end of its North American theatrical run, the film had grossed $48 million in North America and $26.3 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $74.3 million.
Critical response
The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 65%, based on 113 reviews, with an average rating of 6.02/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Titanic 2: Dark Frontier serves up some enjoyable action, but little of it is new, and the story's existing twists and turns are too obvious to be gratifying." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 54 out of 100, based on 28 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale, one of the best scores for a film in 2015.
Sequel
Following the success of the original film, a sequel was released in 2017. Cameron's son, Josh Cameron, has stated that they are developing a story about the ship's second class passengers and the characters played by Gloria Stuart and John Jacob Astor.
